Mountain Top Encounters or Flatland Ministry?

Which do you like better – mountain top excitement or flatland routine? One day Jesus, along with His disciples, Peter, James and John, were on the mountain experiencing divine encounters. As the disciples were looking at Jesus, “His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth (could) whiten” (Mark 9:3). Furthermore, Moses and Elijah arrived. Considering they had both been dead for many years, it had to be an unexpected and exciting shock to the disciples. As if that was not enough excitement for one day, the voice of God spoke from the heavens, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Mark 9:7). By Mark 9:14, Jesus and the three disciples were back in the flatlands with human encounters – a man bringing his son to the disciples for healing from “a mute spirit” (Mark 9:17) followed by Jesus’ rebuke to the disciples for their faithless response, and His teaching on prayer and fasting. Had you been one of the these disciples, Peter, James or John, which would you have preferred, mountain or flatland? The truth is, life consists of both and a balance in highly desirable. Ministry to people is better when paced with time on the mountain, and time on the mountain is better if it leads directly back to ministry in the flatlands.
