Another Good Year

I completed another good year and I’m finally as old as the old people I used to think were old.  I read that 60 was the new 50 and 70 was the new 60, but 80 is 80.  I understand.  Age is interesting.  I’ve never been a big fan of Dr. Seuss, but I like the following: “How did it get so late so soon.  It’s night before its afternoon. December is here before it is June.  My goodness how time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon.” When I shared with a friend that I had observed a big birthday, he responded, “You’ve got lots of gas left in the tank.”  Maybe so, but the tank is amazingly closer to Empty than it was a few years ago.  Plus, have you checked the cost of gasoline lately?  But time has definitely “flewn.” Long-time announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Vic Scully said, “It’s a mere moment in a man’s life between an All-Star Game and an Old-Timers Game.” The only All-Star Game I was ever in, I sat on the bench, but I’ve been to enough Old-Timers Games to know what that looks like.  Keeping the baseball analogy, my desire is to slide, full-speed into Home Plate, rather than dying on third base. However, I must join the Psalmist, and say to the Lord, “My times are in Your hand” (Psalm 31:15).
