Vision and Envision

Last week’s “Monday Morning Manna” made a reference to listening to the radio in my childhood years.   Several friends near my age group responded in various social media.  It caused me to think about it a bit further.  Those of us who grew up listening to the radio developed the ability to envision rather than use our vision.  We actually saw the Lone Ranger riding over dusty trails with Tonto at his side.  We visualized Stan Musial hitting a Home Run in the ninth inning to win a baseball game.  We are not the Visual Generation.  We are the Envision Generation.  While we may enjoy it, we don’t need power-point with our sermons or pictures on our traffic signs. However, realizing that many younger folks who attend worship services where I preach, need vision, I have gladly added the power point pictures and links to my sermons.  I actually enjoy the research that allows me to do so. This reminded me of the church where I served as Interim Pastor that had two Sunday morning worship services.  The early service, as you might imagine, was largely attended by the older members.  They asked that I not use power point with my sermons.  The attendees at the second service wanted it added.  So, I had to have two versions of my sermon every Sunday.  I wonder if envisioning is what David did when he gave Solomon the blueprints for the Temple.  “He gave him the blueprints of all he envisioned for the courts of the Lord’s temple” (I Chronicles 28:12, NET).  David envisioned it.  Solomon made it visible.
