Surprised Counting
Every morning, I step on the scales to be sure I am not gaining weight. At mealtimes I am conscious of the calories I consume, so I don’t count too many. Every day I count the pills I take so I don’t get the wrong number at the wrong time. When walking I look for shortcuts, so I don’t count too many steps. At the end of every month, I count the money I have in the bank, so I don’t overspend. I travel a lot, so I count the miles to be sure they match the gallons of gas in the tank. I count the days between all kinds of appointments and commitments. Thinking of counting, Johnson Oatman wrote more than 3000 hymns, but none, more fitting for me today than one written in the late 1800s. “Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done! Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.” When I do count my blessings, I am always surprised at what God has done. The Psalmist said, “I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You” (Psalm 145:2). I need to spend more time counting my blessings and less time counting the other things in my life.
