Where Soccer Was Not King

The World Cup turned my world into multiple Soccer fans. Everywhere I went it seemed like Soccer was King.  Even folks who had never been to a match before were using words like pitch, header, penalty minutes, knock-out round, golden ball, etc. Nothing wrong with these new words, but then I found an exception – my favorite small town, home cooking, buffet. The place was packed as usual. It was filled with blue jeans, work boots, John Deere hats, and a hostess who called most customers by name as they entered the door. Between my two helpings at the buffet bar and my three trips to the cobbler and home-made ice cream bar, I listened to conversations around me. I heard discussions about the weather, the upcoming status of the local High School football team, how grandma was doing, how Vacation Bible School was going, etc. Not one time did I hear anyone discuss Soccer. Imagine, eating in a restaurant and hearing words about everything but Soccer. Reminds me of Psalm 118:103, “How sweet are your words to my taste .” I realize that today’s Manna has little if any spiritual dimension, except maybe the value of words. So, let your words, whatever the subject, be winners.
