Seems we are hesitant to say anything negative about one who is deceased. It reminds me of the rugged cowboy who attended the funeral of a scoundrel friend, one who had broken at least three-fourths of the laws in the Old Testament. As the pastor was waxing eloquent on the positive characteristics of the deceased, the old cowboy got up and went to the casket to look in. Startled, the pastor asked if there was something wrong. “Nope” said the cowboy, “I was just checking to see if I was at the right funeral.” And then there were the two brothers, equally notorious in their small town. Just before the start of the older brother’s funeral, the younger handed the pastor a $100 bill and said, “Say something nice about my brother.” Mid-way through the eulogy, the pastor paused and said, “Now, I’d like to say something nice about our deceased.” Into the suddenly silent auditorium, the pastor calmly said, “He was a better man than his younger brother.” In contrast, Shakespeare wrote, “The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones.” We’ve had a week of tragic deaths and equally positive eulogies, many of them heartfelt and accurate. Whatever we may think of the lifestyle of the deceased or the sincerity of their eulogies, the Bible says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalms 116:15).

Join me this week in praying for the following global concerns:
• Pray for those who have lost family and friends this week in Boston, MA and West, TX and for those injured as they heal.
• Continue to pray for the search for Steve, an aviation missionary with Sahel Aviation Service, whose plane has disappeared in West Africa.
• Pray for participants of the Vancouver Vision Tour that they would hear from God this week in regard to possible Canadian partnerships.
• Pray for Steve as he prepares to speak at a “Call2All” conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Have you noticed that in death, nearly everyone is spoken of in positive terms?
