As much as I love singing Christmas carols, I confess to not paying much attention to the meaning of the words at times. I saw a cartoon the other day that brought that truth home to me. There was a picture of the manger, baby Jesus and the wise men. In the picture were the words of the 1962 hymn, \u201cDo You Hear What I Hear\u201d \u2013 \u201cA Child, a Child shivers in the cold. Let us bring Him silver and gold.\u201d The caption underneath the picture was one of reality \u2013 \u201cCouldn\u2019t you just have brought him a blanket?\u201d What will you give to the Lord this Christmas? We annually give monetary Christmas offerings for missions, for the homeless, for goodwill, and for numerous other worthy causes. The better question is, will what you give to the Lord this year be something of practical value or just more monetary value? Perhaps this Christmas, in addition to \u201csilver and gold\u201d we could give Him time and talent, work and worship. Only when our service matches our silver and our going matches our gold, can we hear what we should hear and sing what we should sing.<\/p>\n
