In a group meeting we were discussing the negative features of a recent experience. One member blurted out, \u201cIt was a God thing!\u201d When reminded of still other negative features, the self-appointed super-saint insisted, \u201cEverything is a God thing!\u201d I am aware of God\u2019s sovereignty, omniscience, omnipresence, and even the fact that it can be a God thing in the midst of multiple negative features, but \u201ceverything\u201d is not a God thing. My first question would be, why did Paul label Satan, \u201cthe god of this age\u201d (2 Cor. 4:4) if some \u201cthings\u201d are not Satan\u2019s? My second question would be, why could Jesus \u201cdo no mighty work\u201d in Nazareth (Mark 6:5) if His visit there was totally His \u201cthing.\u201d My third question would be what about murder (Exodus 20:13), which is clearly not one of God\u2019s \u201cthings\u201d (commandments). You can\u2019t take a violation of God\u2019s law and suddenly make it God\u2019s \u201cthing,\u201d My point is, with God\u2019s gift of free will, in order for there to be \u201cGod things,\u201d there must also be \u201cnot God things.\u201d That does not leave God out of \u201cthings,\u201d but simply means, He will not violate His own gift of freedom of choice, but will allow negative features to control some experiences, making them not His thing. What we do know is that \u201call things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose\u201d (Romans 8:28).<\/p>\n
