Life is a series of adjustments. I just had another one, but I\u2019m not sure what to call it. I made a big deal about \u201cretirement\u201d not being biblical for those called to vocational ministry, reminding folks that I was only \u201cretiring\u201d from a position, not from a calling. Friday, at my \u201cretirement\u201d reception, the secretaries ordered the cake icing to read, \u201cCongratulations Dr. Crawford on your promotion.\u201d I was afraid I remembered what that meant and sure enough, from the Salvation Army web site, came these words: \u201cPromotion to Glory: The Salvation Army\u2019s description of the death of Salvationists.\u201d I\u2019m not a member of the Salvation Army but my great grandmother came from New York to begin the Salvation Army in Texas, so I am kind of related \u2013 enough that I don\u2019t like this \u201cpromotion\u201d idea any more than the \u201cretirement\u201d idea. Finally, I decided I would use the word \u201ctransition\u201d for this latest adjustment, but when I looked that up in my \u201cCruden\u2019s Complete Concordance\u201d I found only \u201ctransgression\u201d and I didn\u2019t want any part of that. Back to \u201cpromotion\u201d I discovered Proverbs 4:7-8 where Wisdom promotes and honors one and I decided to be \u201cpromoted.\u201d But I refused to eat the part of the cake with that word on it.
