{"id":3162,"date":"2022-07-31T06:28:14","date_gmt":"2022-07-31T11:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discipleallnations.org\/members\/?p=3162"},"modified":"2022-07-31T06:28:14","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T11:28:14","slug":"opinions-without-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discipleallnations.org\/members\/2022\/07\/opinions-without-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Opinions Without Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Approximately fifteen years ago, my granddaughter opened a Facebook account for me with the comment, \u201cBawpaw, you\u2019re going to get old foggy if you don\u2019t get on Facebook.\u201d Within a few weeks I had over a thousand Facebook friends.\u00a0 That list has now grown to several thousand, plus I have added memberships in other social media. I find it not only a good way to stay in touch with a lot of friends, former students, colleagues, neighbors, classmates, but a good monitor of current events and opinions.\u00a0 The sad feature is reading comments from folks who know so little about their subject.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen it repeated many times, especially in recent days \u2013 someone posts a comment, and others jump on board with opinions.\u00a0 They never let their lack of knowledge stop them. \u00a0While reading social media opinions, I often remember three of my favorite quotes.\u00a0 The first is attributed to Abraham Lincoln, with a similar version attributed to Mark Twain \u2013 \u201cBetter to remain silent than to speak and reveal ignorance.\u201d \u00a0Twain\u2019s version is \u2013 \u201cIt&#8217;s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.\u201d \u00a0The second quote is from Plato \u2013 \u201cA wise man speaks when something needs to be said. A fool speaks when he needs to say something.\u201d The third favorite quote is from the writer of Proverbs (especially from a paraphrased version) who said, \u201cEven dunces who keep quiet are thought to be wise; as long as they keep their mouths shut, they\u2019re smart\u201d (Proverbs 17:28,<em>The Message<\/em>).
