I\u2019m sure of it.\u00a0\u00a0My High School Spanish teacher would be so proud of me – if she were still alive. During my time in her class I gave her absolutely no reason for pride.\u00a0\u00a0The truth was I just couldn\u2019t memorize a foreign language. I had the same problem a few years later with Greek, then with Hebrew.\u00a0\u00a0I even tried to learn Chinese.\u00a0\u00a0What a disaster!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I remember telling the Chinese teacher that I was going to drop the class only to hear her reply, \u201cThat would be a good decision.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0In each of these languages, I was like the Psalmist, who proclaimed, \u201cI heard a language I did not understand\u201d (Psalm 81:5). Because I am currently teaching pastors in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, most of whom speak Spanish as their first language, two of my textbooks have been translated into Spanish. My textbook on spiritual formation, \u201cDiscipleShape\u201d is now, \u201cFormacion De Discipuloa\u201d and the textbook on Prayer, \u201cThe Prayer-Shaped Disciple\u201d is now \u201cEl Discipulo Formado a Traves de la Oracion.\u201d The best feature about these two books is that the translating was done by a professional translator, not by me. While I didn\u2019t learn Spanish, I did learn that when you hit a learning roadblock, you look for a detour – or un desvio.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
