I retired from my faculty position sixteen years ago.\u00a0\u00a0Recently, I began teaching again.\u00a0\u00a0I made acquaintance with a few first semester students and felt compelled to offer some unsolicited advice, based on my nine years on a college faculty and twenty-two years on a Seminary faculty: You are not going back to college.\u00a0\u00a0You are now enrolled in Graduate School. More will be expected, and even demanded of you.\u00a0\u00a0When something is due on a specific day and time, you will be graded down if you miss the deadline, no excuses nor apologies accepted.\u00a0\u00a0When you say you will do something, you will be expected to do it. Your schedule will be full, so you will need to manage your time.\u00a0\u00a0Just because you are involved in a ministry situation, is no excuse for missing a class or an assignment.\u00a0\u00a0You will have professors who sincerely believe you belong to them – your time, your commitment, your assignments.\u00a0\u00a0Some classes will seem more important and exciting than others, but they are all important, or they would not be in the curriculum.\u00a0\u00a0You will like some professors more than others, but you will need to listen and learn from even the ones you don\u2019t like.\u00a0\u00a0You are entering some of the best years of your life.\u00a0\u00a0Take it seriously.\u00a0\u00a0Again, this is not college.\u00a0\u00a0In Graduate School, you will need to \u201cput on your big-person pants\u201d so to speak, and take more seriously than ever before, the words of the Lord, <\/span>\u201cYou\u00a0whom\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span>\u00a0taken from the ends of the earth, and\u00a0<\/span>called<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>ts farthest regions, and said to\u00a0<\/span>you<\/span>, you\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0My servant,\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span>\u00a0chosen\u00a0<\/span>you . . .\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(Isaiah 41:9).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
