When I was five years old, going on six, I went to kindergarten, where I was made fun of (is that the same as being bullied?). I will never forget one such incident. Perhaps it is my earliest school memory.\u00a0 It was Halloween and we were told to wear our costumes to school.\u00a0 My mother had purchased a pig mask (no doubt on a sale table in some thrift store). \u00a0I wore it to school because my mother bought it, and it was mine.\u00a0 However, my classmates laughed at me all that day and called me non-flattering names. I remember crying my way home at the close of class that day.\u00a0 Two months later I had my sixth birthday.\u00a0 I begged not to have a party, but we had one anyway.\u00a0 My early birthday parties were always planned so others could have fun.\u00a0 Seldom for my pleasure. One year we went horseback riding.\u00a0 Another year we rode the roller coaster at\u00a0 Playland Park.\u00a0 Neither were my choice activities, nor was I good at either one.\u00a0 Needless to say, I grew up disliking birthday parties and avoiding as many of them as I could.\u00a0 Last week I attended another six-year old birthday party.\u00a0 This time it was for my great-grandson, Crawford Graham Kennedy.\u00a0 By his choice, it was a Dinosaur theme party. \u00a0His friends had a great time and so did he \u2013 and so did I, as I enjoyed the festivities with him.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad I lived long enough to enjoy birthdays, even if they belong to others.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have many birthdays left of my own, so it is important to enjoy others\u2019 celebrations. \u00a0Happy birthday Crawford.\u00a0 Blessings on you as you, \u201cobserve days and months and seasons and years\u201d (Galatians 4:10).\u00a0 I look forward to your next birthday party \u2013 as long as it doesn\u2019t include horses or roller coasters.<\/p>\n
