Paul understood that concept and even though he instructed, “Brethren, I urge you to become like me” (Gal. 4:12) he also pointed them ultimately to Jesus. Spiritual mentoring can so easily and so quickly become dangerous. One is led to faith by a respected believer. Then that respected believer begins to mentor the new convert. The danger on the part of the mentor is an unhealthy ego trip that leads to foolish and unwise advice. The danger on the part of the mentored is a sometimes distorted focus on egotistical advice and ultimately a blind following of an ill-advised direction. How often and how recently have we seen this? And oh the pain of separation between mentor and mentored when realization leads to reality. Be careful who you allow to mentor you this week. Be equally careful how you mentor another this week. Be sure the final model is not an imperfect human being, but rather the infallible Lord.

The danger of spiritual role modeling is that the mentored often become like the mentor and stop there, rather than moving beyond to be like Jesus.
