Lately I\u2019ve been feeling like a King.\u00a0 Let me explain.\u00a0 Several weeks ago, we received a phone call for my wife from the Alumni Office at our alma mater, Howard Payne University.\u00a0 Not sure how many other universities do this, but we elect two Queens at every fall Homecoming \u2013 one is the student Homecoming Queen, elected by the student body and the other is an Alum, \u201cComing Home Queen\u201d selected by the Alumni Board of Directors.\u00a0 When Joanne hung up the phone, she said it was a prank call \u2013 someone telling her she had been \u201cnominated\u201d for this year\u2019s \u201cComing Home Queen.\u201d\u00a0 When I assured her that \u00a0it was not a prank call, her reply was, \u201cI was just nominated, not selected.\u201d\u00a0 I promptly called the Alumni Office to affirm the fact that my wife had been \u201cselected\u201d rather than just \u201cnominated.\u201d\u00a0 Long story short, she is it \u2013 \u201cComing Home Queen 2025.\u201d\u00a0 That makes me the Coming Home King.\u00a0 Right? Well, there are no such awards, but at least I am married to the Queen, even if she is still in partial denial, and I\u2019ve been married to her for sixty-one years. \u00a0Furthermore, I will be the proudest almost King at this year\u2019s Homecoming. She will be honored at the Friday evening Alumni Banquet, ride in the Saturday morning Homecoming parade, and be honored at halftime of the Saturday afternoon football game. \u00a0The idea is that this \u201colder\u201d Queen is held up as a role model for younger women. I don\u2019t want to stretch the point but, similar to another Queen, Joanne may have \u201ccome to the kingdom for such a time as this.
