I confess.\u00a0 I have never been a soccer fan.\u00a0 My excuse?\u00a0 I grew up in Houston in the 1950s.\u00a0 There were no soccer teams or leagues that I knew of.\u00a0 Soccer was a game played up north and in other countries. I also confess that I have enjoyed watching and learning during the current World Cup, although terminology has been difficult. I know that baseball is played on a diamond, football on a gridiron, basketball on a court, ice hockey on the ice, and NASCAR drivers compete on a track, but a \u201cpitch\u201d was a new term for me. \u00a0Some terms need to be unlearned and re-learned. \u00a0I briefly participated on a Golden Gloves Boxing Team during my college years, so I know what a \u201cKnock Out Round\u201d means but now it has a different meaning. I could actually have played soccer in my younger years. I took a Drama class in High School so I would have been able to fall-down and pretend to be injured, like I see the real players do.\u00a0 It\u2019s a shame that they can\u2019t just, \u201crub a little dirt on it.\u201d Although I have watched soccer matches for my kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, I never really knew when to yell and when to sit quietly, but I am learning. Actually, no one seems to sit quietly at a soccer match. Being a biblical semi-scholar, I often find myself trying to connect life events with scripture.\u00a0 It\u2019s a stretch, but even soccer is allowed in the Bible \u2013 \u201cTo everything there is a season\u201d (Ecclesiastes 3:1).<\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
