Sixty-six years ago yesterday a military operation began that committed more than a million allies to combat, and caused 10% of them to become casualties, in order to liberate a people. I saw very little in the newspaper about D-Day; heard very little on the television news, and heard nothing on the radio. I saw an occasional comment on Facebook in between Farmville, Mafia Wars and reports of personal agendas and what was being consumed for dinner. I did see one news article on the eroding beaches of Normandy (33 feet since 1944). Seemingly, they are eroding slower than our memories. How soon we forget those who served and the price they paid for freedom. As important as was that day and those that followed, another significant day saw one man lifted up on another hillside. He too died to liberate people, this time from the bondage of sin. Both those who scaled the rugged cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and He who died on a skull shaped hill called Golgotha deserve to be remembered, but not equally; one calls forth respect and honor, the other calls forth worship and service. Jesus said, \u201cI, if I am lifted up . . . will draw all peoples to Myself,\u201d (John 12:32) lest we forget.<\/p>\n
