\u201cWhy didn\u2019t God answer my prayer?\u201d That was the question posed by the new Christian, although the question is not unique to new Christians. First of all, there is no such thing as unanswered prayer, in spite of the old hymn text by B.B. McKinney. Sometimes, God says \u201cNo\u201d or \u201cWait\u201d but those are answers. When it seems God is not answering we tend to look for reasons. We blame God \u2013 \u201cGod doesn\u2019t care about me!\u201d We blame others. In \u201cMy Utmost for His Highest\u201d, Oswald Chambers wrote, \u201cWhen prayer seems to be unanswered, beware of trying to fix the blame on someone else.\u201d We blame self \u2013 \u201cI must not be living right!\u201d We even blame circumstances \u2013 \u201cThat\u2019s just the way things are right now!\u201d Understanding that God is also present in apparent silence, what ought we to do? Three suggestions: (1) Listen more intently; (2) Walk more closely; (3) Wait more patiently. In Matthew 7:7, Jesus said to \u201cask,\u201d \u201cseek,\u201d and \u201cknock.\u201d While each of those actions promised response, none of them implied the response would be immediate.<\/p>\n
