It reminded me of a Greek word – dunamis (from dunamai). It refers to intrinsic power or inherent ability, the power or ability to carry out some function, in some explosive way (might, strength, ability). From this Greek word, we get our English word, “dynamite”. Acts 1:8 says “you shall receive power (dunamis; dynamite) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” This is the power which God used in our redemption, which God uses in our preservation, and which God will someday use in our glorification. Have you ever been in a power failure? Many of these happen on Sunday mornings under steeples. When will be learn that programs, promotion, and pleasant personnel, are not enough? There must be power. J. Hudson Taylor affirmed this as follows: “Depend upon it. God’s work, done in God’s way will never lack God’s supplies. All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on His being with them. God uses men who are weak and feeble enough to lean on Him.” Paul assured Timothy and us “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and discipline” (2 Tim. 1:7). You and I have dynamite-like power, given to us for the accomplishment of God’s purpose in and through our lives.
