They stick to the shelves around my desk. There is one that I keep seeing on cards, in videos, on T-shirts, in frames, quoted by politicians and ministers alike. Supposedly, in the mid to late 1970’s a university student wrote a line for Carleton Cards, a Canadian card company. These unknown authors were paid a pittance to write cute sayings for greeting cards, copyright included. The quote has been attributed to many people over the years, but it is anonymous because Carleton never realized that so many would find the quote significant. Today, the author is well aware of the irony of his words…. thousands of dollars have been made off of this quote. He made a quarter. The quote? “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Actually the quote could have originated from a spiritual experience in Genesis 2:7 where God allowed man to have a pre-creation, breathless moment followed by a God-breathed moment. “The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” God has been re-breathing life into us ever since. In the words of Edwin Hatch from a hymn written in the late 1800s, “Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.”

Join me this week in praying for the following global concerns:
• On August 24 – 25, the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary/College will be celebrating their 25th anniversary. Pray for this strategic institution.
• Pray for national leaders from around the world, as they gather in Thailand this week to discuss ways of partnering together in the harvest.
• Over 45 million Ukrainians will celebrate Independence Day this Friday, August 24, commemorating 21 years of independence from the former Soviet Union. Pray for the 98% who have never experienced true freedom through a personal relationship with Christ.

I’m a sucker for catchy quotations.
