Thank God for God
After sharing thanks for various things, a friend said to me, “And thank God for God.” Not being familiar with that phrase, I soon went to my Bible to see if it was there. I found lots of phrases that began with “Thanks to God . . .” and “Thanks God for . . .” and “Thanks for God’s . . .” but no “Thank God for God.” Did anyone in the Bible thank God for God? Best I can tell, they did not, at least not in those exact words. Oh, many thanked God for various things and a few expressed thanksgiving for God’s attributes, but was God ever thanked for simply being God? The closest I could get was Psalm 116:17: “I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.” If you have a scripture reference that specifically thanks God for being God, I’d sure be glad for you to share it with me. Further, I found a few Google references to the phrase, but nothing of specific benefit. So I pondered. When I am thankful for something or someone, I thank God, but when I am thankful for God, whom do I thank? Obviously, I have no one better to thank for God, than God. So, let me encourage you to join me in beginning this week thanking God for God.
Join me in remembering the following global concerns:
• Pray for those who serve in European countries. Statistics show that nearly 99% of Europeans are living in spiritual darkness.
• Pray for Patricia as she completes the work for two Cameroonian scripture translations projects, and considers her future role with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
• Pray for Mark and Olga as they transfer from Russia to Toronto to reach Russian speakers and Slavic speaking immigrants.
